Congrats on doing things the right way, but…
It was just water…. sorry.
You can use either pure ammonia, or even ‘feed’ the tank a pinch of food every day – which will decompose and produce ammonia. But there has to be a source.
What you will see is Ammonia increase steadily, then it will start to drop off. At that time, Nitrite will start to show up. Eventually the Nitrite will start to drop and Nitrate will make an appearance.
When Ammonia and Nitrite are zero with established Nitrate you have a cycle.
