Can you put distilled water into a goldfish tank?
We just bought a fish tank (with fish!) off craigslist, but the water level is to low for the filter. I understand you’re suppose to let the water sit for 10 days, is this just to make it sedentary? Would adding distilled water work?

Don’t listen to anyone, especially the person who said put them in salt water. Dear jesus christ, don’t do that. Distilled water is also called R.O. water (reverse osmosis water). It’s fine it just has a low PH.
yes, it would be fine.
Distilled water would be fine….
It would be best to put them in salt water. I have read it in a few places but if you are not sure just look it up
distilled water works too though
yes but i used spring when i had tank.
NO GOD NO DON"T DO IT FOR GOD SAKES HAVE A HEART OMG OMG WHAT HAS THIS WORLD COME TO?
I think regular water with the right amount of aquarium salt would be best
its not gonna hurt the fish but you cant, I dont give you permission to do that and since im a man and your a woman you have to obey me
Would work no problem, you could even put tap water but only if your adding no more then 25% of the whole tank.
Its OK
u could add distilled water. the best thing to do would be to buy these fish im sorry i dont know the name but if you look up fresh water cycyling fish you should find them, there very hard fish so they wont die mabye one or two but thats ok buy like 10 of them they cycle the water really quick so u can add fish and take them out in about 3-4 days
You can use distilled water with no problem. Just make sure you add some aquarium salt in too. 1 tablespoon for every 5 gallons of water. I dont know who told you you had to wait 10 days before you can add tap water but they are wrong. All you have to do is put the water conditioner in it and let it get to room temperature. once again, who ever you got your information from was incorrect. Good luck and Congradulations on your new fish tank. Enjoy.
you might want to play it safe and use the drops – did you get some rocks and food too? You are supposed to let a treated tank in a new environment sit for 24 hours before adding new pets in. If you have the fish in a bag with the original water put them and all the water in a glass bowl. I wouldn’t trust walmart water with my kids so, sorry but no. Just start a new tank the right way. Fish like the right temperature and they do not like chlorine at all. Transfer the fish with some of it’s water, it will get shock – transfer the water a little ahead of time. I think you saved your fish – or have a lovely tank to sell me. Be sure to change the water many times over until you know they will get through. It may take a transition of that long but I don’t know the breed or the situation.
Well, I use an additive like AquaSafe to get rid of metals, minerals, chemicals in tap water that kill goldfish. Distilled water might work. I haven’t tried it, but I’ve always used water straight from the tape treated with Aqua Safe, and my goldies are over a year old.
About letting the water sit, I thinking it has to do with the bacteria, you see, when goldfish poop, you get good bacteria and bad ones. The good ones process nitrate, nitrite compounds compounds that are harmless to fish but make great food for plants. The bad ones kill the fish.
Get the following: Fungi Tablets ( to fight against diseases )
Aquarium Salt, NOT iodized, iodine kills fish.
Cycle Bacteria by Nutrafin ( comes in a white bottle, introduces good bacteria and reduces fish loss)
Optional pH test kits
I’ve found controlling ph to be a pain in the a**, but as long as you don’t have more than an 4 inches of gold fish ( goldfish length combined ) per 10 gal, change 50% of water every 2 weeks ( to keep good bacteria) add aquarium salt after water change to make up for salt loss, clean tank once a month and put Fungus tablets without the carbon filter, and feed them just enough for them to eat in 30 seconds ( their stomach is about the size of their eye), you should do fine.
Hope this helps!
p.s. Plants LOVE the old aquarium water! It’s full of nutrients and bacteria, and poop that they need to energize. Kinda like Tropical Smoothie?
You can add water off the sink. just make sure its dechlorinated. distilled water will also work but if it has a different ph, it might stress your fish. 10 days? where did you hear that? You do have to let it adjust for 24 hours though before adding fish in but you can’t do that now.You don’t let the water "sit" its called cycling your aquarium. (it takes 3+ weeks)if you dont know about this, be careful because you might end up with dead fish due to ammonia poisoning. (buy a test kit to make sure your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate levels dont get too high) Change 20% of the water if they are until they clear up.Read this article to clear things up…

sure. Do some research about it.
