If you are going to drink the water, either change the filter or remove it. The gunk accumulated even with low use will sit in the filter and multiply on it’s own (if bacteria or virus) and most communities claim drinking water to be healthy.
I suggest you consider your local water supply, and if you would not drink the water directly from the tap without filtration, then change the filter.
bottled water is not a great alternative, cost, ecological damage, and no control on water quality.
