Do plants prefer distilled water, or tap water?
if you added plain old distilled water to a plant, would it grow more than if you gave a plant tap water?

It does make a difference with some plants depending on your tap water. The best book I have on houseplants indicates water preference for the plants that might need distilled. It tells you why and tells you the symptoms of a plant that’s begging for different water etc…
pretty pictures too!

well on my plants i use distilled because tap water can have chlorine in it
I think it would grow better with tap water. Plants need minerals in addition to water so a little mineral content in your tap water should make it grow better than distilled water.
Well, Im not sure about plants, though we gave distilled water to my friends fish, and he died….You could try, I mean For photosynthesis it would be pure water, though. Experiment!
i don’t think it makes a difference.
Water is a carrier of minerals – so if you give a plant
mineral-less water – it will leach the minerals out of the plant -
and also your body
Chlorinated water has enough chlorine to kill bacteria -
and is still potent enough when it gets to your house to kill the flora in your digestive system, too, hence the ‘new’ yogurts and pro active cheeses that will put the flora back in to boost your immune system (same thing that happens when you take anti-biotics)
So I filter my water – for me to drink and shower in, my plants
AND ESPECIALLY THE FISH!!!
FINAL ANSWER
have a great 2008!

Tap water kept over night can be used next day as chemicals
evaporate and Calcium sits at the bottom.
I love plants and every winter, this is how I keep my indoor and out door plants alive in the home.
depending on where you live, either distilled or spring water is better for your plants. But the best water is Rain. Try to collect some when it rains, but no run-off from the roof.
It depends on the plant. Most that I have grown do perfectly fine with regular tapwater.
The one thing you may notice is that the top of your soil will start to get a fine white coating from tapwater, I assume this is calcium.
I can’t say that a plant will grow any better with one or the other. Fertilizer is what encourages growth.
I will say that if you use tap water let it sit out for 24 hours to let the chlorine dissolve and to allow it to come to room temperature. Plants don’t like cold water. It shocks them.
