All you have to do is ignore everyone. Then take your water from your tank. Then have the fish store test your water. This is usually free. They will tell you if your tank has cycled and if it is safe to add fish.
I have betta fish and they each get their own 10 gallon fish tank and I can throw them in right away.
I have also had good luck with gold fish going in right away but there will always be that one time that it doesn’t work.
I found this blog at that said that you should wait until the water is no longer cloudy and sufficient P.H and water temperatures have been established.
But some fish are hardy enough to endure the high nitrite levels and ammonia in the new fish tank.
It needs to be cycled. You can let it sit there for months and it will not be safe for fish until it is cycled.
Go to a book store or library and get some beginner’s books on aquarium keeping. You have a lot to learn before you own fish.
Baymast ll is right. The tank needs to be cycled. Read on this site all you need to know about your fish and their water.

you should let your tank go for about a week ( because good Bacteria has to build up in uur filter)…or around, the filter wont remove any nastys lyk chlorine or chloramine so youll need declorinater. if you dnt want to leave it you can buy live good bacteria in any good pet shop
hope this helped!!!!
ok…..you have to let it run 2 days and a half day since it’s a 12 gallon… you could put 2 goldfish or a bunch of neon or 5 guppies dont mix them male and female because they will produce like crazy!
3 days minimum or a week is better. You can speed it up to a couple of days if you can get water from an established tank and add it to your aquarium. Like one of those big plastic hardees cups full. It add the bacteria that your filter is trying to grow to make a healthy environment for your fish.
Also, a filter won’t remove chlorine. If that is your issue then you either need to buy a chlorine remover which works or get a container equal to 2/3s of your fish tanks volume, fill it with your chlorine water and let it sit for a week or two. The chlorine will be removed from the water naturally.
As long as you add dechlorinator, you can add fish right away. Dechlorinator works instantly to remove chlorine.
that is a Very good Question, and a lot of people think that they can do that for a few days and toss in fish but that is incorrect.
4-6 weeks would be about what I’d recommend.
this may be some help
Ok. Obviously you are new to fish.

I started with a pad of graph paper to draw out a basic idea of the tank, where I would put the rocks and create the caves. Run the air lines how you want to angel the flow of the filter to create a currents. Where you will put the out puts for an under gravel filter How many heaters you will have and where you will put them, How many filters
MUST:
-Dechlorinator
-Test Kit
-Tank (unless you are going to walk it every day LOL)
-Cover W/ light
-Filter
-Heater
-Air pump
-Air line
-Air stones
Recommended:
Gravel (I like the natural setting)
Slate Rocks you can make caves so the fish can hide
Fake plants
Cycling
Why:
to establish a bacteria growth that will break down the waist of fish, and remove the harmful chemicals such as ammonia
How:
set up a tank with the filter, heater ect
allow the tank to run if you can get the filter media of an established tank this will jump start the cycle. or you could add a small amount of ammonia to the tank such as a table spoon per gallon (NO FISH IN THE TANK) this will start the cycle as well. Let it run for 4-6 Weeks then you may add 1 or 2 Hardy fish(Croy, Pleco, Guppy) . 2 fish if it’s a medium sized tank (20+) 1 if it is a small tank (less than 20) They will break the tank in it may take a month until you can add additional fish add a small amount (1) Pay attention to the PH and Ammonia Levels do changes to the water weekly at first 10-20%
Purchasing fish ><> ><> ><)>
First where did you get the fish? was it a box store like PetCo? I don’t like those stores the fish there are like Typhoid Marry. I made the mistake of getting a Pretty fish from there and Almost lost my entire setup with an Ick/fin rot situation. Find a store that only deals with fish, has a musty/mildew smell. Because this environment is what the fish strive in. Look at every tank make sure the tank doesn’t have any fish that have a distressed or sick look to them. Talk to the employees Ask how long the fish have been at the store where the breeders are from you don’t want a fish that was a mail order because the stress in transport. Don’t be afraid to Drive the distance or pay a little more for the fish. (I’d rather pay more than Loose my tank that I had put 3 years of work in).
Here is my set up
