Both my shih tzus have watery eyes and it stains the fur and skin under their eyes..it also smells and we have to wash it frequently..Someone told us to use distilled water, but I’m not sure it is safe for everyday, or if it will make a difference.

It shouldn’t do any harm but I dont think it will make any difference other than to clean the fur. Tear stains in small dogs are usually due to blocked or absent tear ducts. They need unblocking by a vet if you actually want to stop the leaking.

Not sure if that will make a difference. I have a dog who had very runny eyes, he went to the vet and found out he had a food allergy that was making his eyes do that. He was allergic to corn in his dog food, so we had to switch his food. Another possibility is allergies, your vet could decide to put them on antihistamines if its excessive running. I have never heard of using distilled water, but I doubt it would be unsafe, since its just water, you could try it for cleaning the eyes
