Is there any way to make ‘soft-water’ without a water softener?
I rent an apartment in the upstairs of a house without a water softener. Not having soft water is really taking a toll on my long hair, and I was wondering- is there any way that I could make soft-water myself? My landlord refuses to spend the money on a softener for the house. I just want a tub or sink-full amount of water to wash my hair…is there any way to do this? or is there any type of small filter that attatches to a faucet or anything?

Collect rain water to wash your hair
Use baking soda.
I looked at a few websites, but couldn’t get a ratio of baking soda to water.
Hard water is due to excess alkali, for instance lime which is calcium carbonate.
Sodium carbonate, or washing soda, will do this quite effectively and is very cheap.
The addition of sodium carbonate also softens hard water containing calcium sulfate, as the calcium ions form calcium carbonate which precipitates out and sodium sulfate is formed which is soluble. The calcium carbonate that is formed sinks to the bottom. Sodium sulfate has no effect on the hardness of water.
Na2CO3 + CaSO4 → Na2SO4 + CaCO3
get a Charcoal filter it removes minerals
or a"PUR" filter [counter top] or faucet mount
Collect rain water or melt snow.
