My dog isn’t drinking enough water i think?
So when i leave for school in the morning i give him fresh water (from the tap) and then when i get home there’s not much difference, as if he doesn’t drink it at all. So my bro and I filled up a water bottle with filter water (using that Pur filter). When we bottle fed it he wanted more, but when i lead him to his water bowl he doesn’t want to drink. I put some of this stuff called Aquafresh in the water, it’s a breath freshener. Still, he doesn’t drink it. I think it might be that the water’s from the tap. What’s happening, how do i get him to drink?
I used the dehydration test before, he wasn’t dehydrated. Yes, he knows how to drink out of a bowl because usually after dinner or after a walk he’d run up to it and take huge laps(slowly, we made sure it he didn’t gulp air). I’ll try using bottled water. When we put ice cubes, he just fishes them out and gnaws on them and leaves them to melt on the carpet/floor.

he might not know how to drink from a bowl…this sounds silly, but it’s true! My piano teacher had a poodle who didn’t learn how to drink from a bowl, he still doesn’t. When he is thirsty he rings a bell by the sink and they lift him up to drink from the faucet.
I don’t know of any other way to remedy the problem though, sorry.
Maybe you can talk to the vet, and see what he has to say about it.
maybe he does drink but dogs tongues don’t pick up alot of water so maybe thats why you cant notice a diffrence
Here is a simple and easy way to test for dehydration in a dog. A well-hydrated dog has elastic skin. A dehydrated one does not.
Near the spine, pinch the skin together (about 1-2 inches worth). If it slides back quickly, he’s hydrated sufficiently. If the skin stays there for a second and then slow begins to release, he’s dehydrated. Believe me, it’s very easy to tell. My dog at one point had renal failure (swallowed some advil) which promotes excessive urination which leads to dehydration. When you pinch the skin of a dehydrated dog, it just stays bunched up and does bounce back to the normal position quickly.
Now, just because your dog isn’t touching his water bowl doesn’t mean he’s not drinking. It doesn’t sound like he’s crated. Dogs drink may drink out of toilets. I caught our dog once drinking out of my wife’s bedside glass. They’ll drink out of bird baths, puddles and old tires. They’ll lick the grass for moisture. So don’t assume your dog isn’t getting water during the day.
Water sitting all day gets stale. Invest in a water dispenser bowl for your dog. Any pet store should sell them. Or maybe put just ice in the bowl, he may like it cold, as it melts he’ll drink it.
If you are worried about dehydration then gently pinch the skin between the shoulder blades and if it snaps right back into place, he’s getting enough water. If the skin stays up longer than an eye blink he is a little dehydrated and you should put a call into your vet. I hope this helps. And he may not like tap water. Good luck and I hope your puppy is ok.
First check his urine,if it is bright yellow to orange,he may have a bladder or urinary infection,He would have to go to the vet asap for medication. If it looks light yellow or clear, you can try some child Pedialyte drink in his water dish, this would be tasty and even though it is not for long term,it will keep him hydrated until you can take him to the vet. Animals have to drink water, some faucet water is tainted so use bottled water whenever you can, Look around the yard if he is an outdoor dog and see if he could be drinking from puddled water around the house that you may not know of,He could be getting his water from other sources,so be sure to check the color of his urine to see if its an infection instead ,Good luck, its always good to call you vet and ask them what they think,
If your dog is not drinking enough water, try feeding him an ice cube. it will give him some water to keep him hydrated.
