PLEASE CLICK!!!How do i keep my other fish from dying? Also, what is wrong with my fish?
Ok, i have a 10 gallon tank with heater, slightly high ph (well, really at the highest amount for a beta and tetras-7.4), a thermometer, a filter, 1 beta, and 4 (well, NOW four) neon tetras. 2 days ago, i bought 5 neon tetras. they were to go with my beta that i currently had in the 10 gallon tank. the water is pure, i clean it approx. every 4-5 days. when i first got my tetras and put them in, they were fine. yesterday, i noticed the beta was sometimes swiming right next to them, but they were out in the open and he was "stalking" in the plants. occasionally they would swim together in the open, so i figured it was ok. half the time, this one neon tetra (he was a tad longer and slimer than the others, and had more potent coloring) would separate from the others, sometimes swiming side by side with the beta. this morning, i was feeding my fish when i realized only 4 were swiming around in the tank. i couldn’t find the last one! my mom went fishing around the tank with her hand when…
…she accedentally uprooted two plants. when she was re-planting them. she saw a tetra floating around with no tail at the surface. my little "rebel" was dead! he must of been held down by the plants. he definetely wasn’t floating b4. non the less, we think the beta bit off his tail. now, the other fish always stay in a school, but occasionally separate. ever since, ive noticed they are a more aggressive. the beta is always "stalking" in the plants, though it looks as if he is looking for food. but, just now i saw he looked for food right beneath the tetras, and i tapped the tank so that the tetras would see him. then he tried to take a little nip out of them one, but he got away. i really want my fish to stay safe, what should i do???
p.s. i also got these fish from petco, so i still have a warently on the 5 tetras if i should by new to keep the quantity high. thx!
i let my tank go through the cycles and all that already.
oh and also, for the part of the question saying what is wrong with my fish, my beta has this large lump (about the size of his head) right behind his gills.
did i forget to say the dead neon had NO TAIL!!! (when he was found dead , of course.)
im still waiting for answers…desperately!

It’s really not all that uncommon to lose a Neon when you first get them. The stress of shipping, being in the store, getting netted and bagged, then finally plunked in a completely new environment is sometimes too much for them.
This happens, and it is why the stores have a replacement guarantee.
Unless you see signs of fungus or parasites, or any disease for that matter, I would not worry too much.
Watch your other fish carefully, as long as everything looks normal, I think you can count this as a fish lost due to stress of acclimation.
OK, the additional part hadn’t loaded for me….
You need to look into that situation with the Betta - a lump the size of his head is not right. Possibly a tumor of some kind? Not an expert in Betta maladies.
The missing tail could have been a clue - the fish may have lodged himself under the plant to try to get away from an aggressor. Then again, the tail munching could have happened postmortem. Really no way to tell.
The fish could have died of the stresses listed above, being harassed by the Betta could have added to that.
Some Bettas are more tolerant of tankmates than others. People always seem to think their Betta looks sad and needs friends. Well, Bettas are not capable of forming sad or happy expressions, if they are even capable of feeling such emotions - which is highly doubtful. So I have no idea how people arrive at these conclusions. They are not a shoaling species, quite the contrary actually. When it comes to Bettas, they should be considered "loners". They are, at best, unpredictable with tankmates.
Beta fish are also called Siamese Fighting Fish or Beta Splendens. Male Betas cannot be put in the same bowl together because they will fight. It may be possible that your beta ate the tetra.
*I had a Beta once with a bunch of guppies and the guppies were eaten*
Did you let your tank go through the nitrogen cycle? If not, it may have been high ammonia or nitrites. Or, your betta could of have eaten it. Did you find it’s body? If so, did it have a hole in it or was is just as it was when you purchased it? It could have been parasites, bacteria, or even dropsy. There are hundreds of other possibilities.
you found them dead your betta got it
If your neon tetra was okay but just dead, maybe something in the water caused it or maybe over fed. I had a betta with my platys and guppies and he never did anything to them. people say they are mean but it all depends on their own personality.
If you saw the betta flare at the neons maybe he did kill the tetra, but I really dont think so.
A beta is not considered a community fish. I have however kept them in my community tank for years. The problem is though that if a beta feels crowded he will eat the other fish. He is perfectly peaceful, except with another beta, until he feels crowded, then he just eats everybody smaller. A tank will hold about 1 inch of fish per gallon of water if it is properly aerated, but a beta feels crowded easier than this. Give up and buy a bigger tank, a 10 gallon needs to be cleaned all the time. A well balanced 20 or larger almost never needs cleaning if again it is properly filter, you just vacuum the tank every once and a while, make sure you have bottom feeders like catfish and also add some algae eaters to clean out the algea. I never clean my 39 gallon at all unless I have to move it.
