I thought I read when I bought the thing years ago that when the red goes all the way over the window the water stops flowing thru the filter. I usually change it when the red is somewhere in the window but the last time I let it go, unintentionally, and sure enough, the water stopped flowing when the window was completely red. I have been through about four of them in the last 6 or 7 years.

I always wondered that because they don't tell you in the instructions. Regardless, I replaced it when the window was almost full of red -- by that time, the water flow was pretty low and I could afford a new one. Plus I got as much out of the filter as I probably could, and since the water I'm starting with isn't horrible, the filter was still good.

Obviously the right answer really depends on your water -- if your water contains a lot of chemicals, the filter will be exhausted much more quickly than normal. Manufacturers of systems like this have to engineer the filters to cover all bases, so the interval they recommend is likely the shortest given the worst incoming water.

Hope that makes sense -- basically, the better your incoming water, the longer the filter will last. Give it until halfway through the red and see where you're at.

Hope it helps!

mine stops when it's had enough, about 1/3 red. i suppose you could change it when the red starts to show, it's personal preference.
