Question about hanging on the back fish tank filter?

I often read people saying do not change the filter cartridge, and just to rinse it out with old water? But what if its the kind that you buy that comes with many filter cartridges? You know the ones that hang on the back and you just slide the new cartridges in or out..I hope that makes sense. Weren’t these types of filters made to have the cartridges replaced?

it comes with filters because you are supposed to change them. You can re-use them once or twice by rinsing them out, but they should be changed now and then.
I employ 2 OTB filters and only every swap a cartride in one, and rinse the other. Then alternate the next time. I also have bioballs in my filter compartments which leads to faster growth of the bacteria once new media is put in. But yes you do lose a large chunk of your biofilter by changing the media. But you can’t leave it forever, not all bacteria growing on that sucker is beneficial.
Well I have many of these filters and a lot have different cartridges.
I change mine every 2 months about. I rinse mine in the tank water in a bucket one month then replace it a month later depending on the situation.

Swap cartridges once they deteriorate. Rinse them during filter maintenance. Use your healthy judgement.
Every month you should change the filter cartridge. In between weeks, you should wash it out with treated water to get rid of the waste that builds up on it. It will work better and last a whole month if you keep doing that.
So many people ponder this question when there is an easy answer. YES. I am a fish expert I have cared fro thousands of my own and other fish. Almost every single fish filter in the world are made to be replaced. You can rinse it off and reuse it, however after awhile it looses its quality and it’s soon like not having a filter at all. I recommend changing it every time with a new filter, (of course a new filter of the filter type that it requires).
Many filters come with free filter cartridges. However this does not mean you aren’t supposed to but anyone. For your filter, I recommend buying is from Pets Mart or your local pet store. I have three filters just like yours, and trust me when I say that changing it for a new one is fine.
You should replace it every 4-6 weeks. If the filter has a sponge that will hold a lot of the beneficial bacteria. Otherwise you could throw in some sort of filter media to help out. The majority of the beneficial bacteria is in the filter, but there is still a lot in the gravel, on plants and decorations so you should be ok.
You want to change your catridges on a normal bases. mayne once a month or every 2 month. it will keep a good flow of water. now the only reason why peopel would say dont change them is to keep the good bacteria going. There is another way to do this. Behind your filter catridge there should be a kind of Squiare Rectangle sponge. these things could be made of different things. it could be sponge, a hard substance that looks like coral or many other things. If your dont see it then u should at least see that there is at least a inch of space back there. go to your local pet store and ask them for it. explain where it goes and what your looking for. they will have Exactly what u need. now thing thing u will NEVER change due to the fact its keeping the bacteria u want in the tank. but the filter u do change with ur carbon on a monthly basis. hope it helps
Remove the carbon and they are less disposable. Eventually they wear out, but last much longer.
