I really wouldnt use spring water. It can have all sorts of things that you dont want in your salt tank.
at your local fish store they should sell RO water (reverse osmosis) that you can buy in gallons.
If not then i would invest in an RO unit if i were you. Especially if you have a reef tank. Distilled water is kinda espensive compared to RO water
Distilled. The reason is that salt water tanks evaporate quickly. As they do the water hardness will increase. So by adding water with some digree of hardness to the tank will slowly increase the over all hardness of the tank. Also spring water will have chemicals deposite from filtering which might not be good for a saltwater aquarium. If you are buying all your water for the tank it might be a good idea to get an under the sink RO filtering system. They run around $130 if I remember right.
Good Luck.
Spring water can be okay, depending on where it comes from. Unless you trust it, I wouldn’t recommend it. Distilled water is also a no-no. It’s absolutely pure water, which isn’t good for fish either. Think about it – lake and river water isn’t pure – it has all sorts of minerals and nutrients.
Most tap water is okay, but since it varies it’s usually best to avoid it if possible. I’ve had plenty of success with it, but some fish are so delicate that it might harm them.
Your absolute best best, especially for a saltwater tank is to get R/O water from a local fish store, or buy a tapwater filtration system. Both will remove impurities, but using your salt mix will add everything they need.
man do your self a faver go ro/di and be done with it,,,sooner or latter you know you going to do it anyway … no more lugging bottles back and fourth , .
