For a long time i would reuse a gatorade bottle, filling it up with water every time i ran out. However, i have heard that it might be harmful for us and it is advisable to drink from a glass bottle instead. On the radio, they were talking about kids as young as 10 years old reaching puberty due to the negative effects of these plastic bottles. Would it be alright if you just didn’t leave it out in the sun? It would be helpful for people to shed some advice on this subject…

In the last few years as we all know bottled water has sprung out of nowhere, and now you can’t walk anywhere without stepping on a crushed bottle of Aquafina or what have you. I see so many kids walk past drinking fountains at school only to go to the machine and get a bottle of water. Is this just a fad, or are we as Americans getting dumber? If you are so obsessed with keeping hydrated, just buy a reusable one for like .
I really just do not understand why people buy that stuff. It is horribly energy inefficient to make and recycle, and if you don’t recycle it that’s even worse. 10 years ago if you said "bottled water" people would laugh at you. Now everybody carries them around like it’s some sort of prized possession. If you are so concerned about the quality of your tap water, get a filter. Studied have shown that "pure filtered quality water", or however the heck you want to market it, is the same crap that comes out of your tap.
Is this a serious issue or am I just crazy?

Ok, the house is 10 years old. We have a maytag plastic interior dishwasher. We have a 7 year old culligan water softener system,
The area has hard water but the water softener makes it softer.
The problem is we are seeing, powder residue on the dishes. We have tried that plastic booster but its coming back again.
1) Do we need a dishwasher with a stainless steel interior?
2) Do we need to turn the hot water up?
3) Clean the water softener? (Had water tested and its fine)
4) Any other ideas?
Help!!! Its driving our family nuts!

Last year I bought a brand new home. When we first moved in all the toilets had a reddish (not rusty looking though) film around where the water in the toilet sat. I have noticed since then that whenever we don’t use a toilet for a while (like if we are out of town) the same thing happens. I have also noticed that some of my silverware is rusting in the dishwasher which has never happened to me before. We have a Culligan water softener which is supposedly in perfect working order. Any idea what could cause this?
Thanks for the answers. We don’t have well water over here. And the only thing that really seems to be rusting in knives for some reason. They are not cheap knives either. I have gone through at least 3 sets of knives that cost over 0 each. I’ve tried Cuisine Art, JA Henkles, etc. I mean these things say "stainless steel" My mom has knives that she’s had for 10+ years and runs them through the dishwasher all the time and she’s never seen a speck of rust. I just don’t get it.

I used to buy those 24-packs of Bottled Water for like per box. I’d go through 3-4 bottles a day.
My friend suggested I buy a Brita or Pur tank and just filter it using tap water. He said it’ll save money in the long run. But the filters have to replaced every 2 months, and they cost about -10 per replacement.
Which way do you use? Which one saves the most money? (And by Brita, I DONT mean the faucet extension – I’m talking about the pitcher)
btw, I live in NYC right now and lived in Miami for the last 10 years!

My current water softener is only 10 years old but we keep having a problem with the salt getting rock hard. It’s a bear to break up and then it happens again in a few months. The softener is in the basement in the laundry however we have both A/C & heat. Anyone know why mine keeps doing it or what brand would be better. Thanks much

I had a well water test fail for high of a sodium content in my water. I had a test done about 18 months ago and there was no issue with sodium content. Is the water softener to blame? It seems to be about 10 years old (I have owned the house for 5 years). I am trying to avoid the cost of a reverse osmosis system. Thanks.

I went to Sears and they had individual reverse-osmosis filters for under your kitchen sink that go for -300 that take filters changes every 6 months or else they’ve got a central water whole home filtration system that costs 0 but is self-cleaning, does the whole house, and doesnt need changing for over 10 years. I want to have water be drinkable in the house and don’t mind it just coming from the kitchen. But I could see my family and I flaking on changing the filters. But I’m guessing just one at the sink would taste better than one for the entire house. Here’s the links I’m looking at: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_04238556000P?vName=Appliances&cName=Water+Treatment

I was given an Equinox EQ-15 water filter with no instructions. I can remember installing one about 10 years ago but I forgot how long to flush it.
Thanks, Pat

Filter of the highest quality that cleans out ALL of the potentially hazardous chemicals and particles found in raw faucet water. I want to drink the water without worrying that I might get cancer in 10 years.
So once again, the highest quality water filter that is available on the market, preferably with a fixed filter (so one doesn’t have to change it all the time).
Thanks a lot!

The water system guy increased the pump presure of my well a couple weeks ago stating that my water filtration system was not working properly since pump was set at 20/40 psi? He increased it to 40/60 psi. Now when the water filtration system rejuvenates, water backs up into my washer tub. I am also on a septic too but this is clear water and does not smell, nor did this happen prior to him changing this dial on my well pump. What is wrong here? I have been in this house for 10 years plus had the water filtration system for 9 years. He has been the same water guy who has been to my house each year to change my filters the whole time. But since I have a high content of iron in my water, he has to rebuild the heads on my filtration system each year. He said increasing the pressure of my well pump would stop this problem. Now I have a new one and he is saying it’s my septic. Someone please help?
