i am desperate. I have tried to find consumer reports with no luck, only sites promoting their system. I have very hard water. is affecting the pipes, appliances, hair, clothes, etc. What is a dependable easy to use system that wont eat all my savings?

The total hardness of the water from our well is 22ppm ( = 22 mg/L or 1.3 gpg) with no detectable iron. I understand why water sometimes needs to be softened but in particular was wondering if anyone else has heard of certain levels at which water should or shouldn’t need to be softenned.
We will be using bottled water for drinking. Mostly concerned about the level of hardness and its effect on appliances.

Please list reasons why you personally chose to buy a water softener for your home in the order of most importance to least importance. And which brand did you choose?
Some reasons to stir up your mind: features of the water softener, the benefits to your home, cheaper than hard water, skin problems, less home cleaning, extending appliances, clothes, and so on.
All comments are great.

I went to Sears and they had individual reverse-osmosis filters for under your kitchen sink that go for -300 that take filters changes every 6 months or else they’ve got a central water whole home filtration system that costs 0 but is self-cleaning, does the whole house, and doesnt need changing for over 10 years. I want to have water be drinkable in the house and don’t mind it just coming from the kitchen. But I could see my family and I flaking on changing the filters. But I’m guessing just one at the sink would taste better than one for the entire house. Here’s the links I’m looking at: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_04238556000P?vName=Appliances&cName=Water+Treatment

I was wondering if I could use it for appliances calling for distilled water.
