our house has a water softener unit about 10 yrs old; there seems to be a large chunk of salt at the bottom; what is the best way to dissolve it?
Jeanne suggests solar salt; is this a joke?; never heard of it

ice maker is not dispensing ice and water dispenser just drips. the other night i noticed a big chunk of ice in the bottom of the freezer. took off the back paneling and defrosted it with a hair dryer. drain pan was full of water and still had a little still standing. did i not get it unclogged all the way?

Temporary water filters for kitchen sink?

My university accomodation has no filtered water (i.e. with fluoride removed)… Since it is their property I can’t get a plumber to play around with the pipes and install a filter. So is there something – like a cap – that I can wrap around the tap head, to trap the added chemicals? How big would this cap be? (I will be sharing the water source with others and I don’t want a big chunk contraption hovering over the sink)

Any other tips appreciated

I have city supplied water, no pump or well.

My water pipes make a "chunk, chunk, chunk" sound in the house when the water is running (shower, dish washer, sink, etc.). I saw a question & answer here about pipe rumbling noise *after* the water is turned off being related to air in the pipes, but my problem is while the water is running – it stops when you turn off the water. Is this a similar problem (air)?

What can I do to make it stop doing that?
