purifying "city" water?

Im used to drinking well water straight from the tap and we get it tested every year to make sure we dont need a filter. Now Im away at college and its getting pretty old carrying those 2.5 gallon jugs from the grocery store to my dorm.. Are you able to filter city water with just those little filters (http://www.amazon.com/PUR-DS-1800Z-2-Stage-Water-Dispenser/dp/B0006MQCA4)? or do you need a whole system?

This mineral has formed in a crystalline structure on the outside (not in a problematic way) around the valve for hot water, but not cold. I think this has something to do with galvanization and specifically could involve a reaction with zinc oxide. So what is this and why is it only on the hot water side?
(Note: It comes off very easily, is not a hazard, water is clean by virtue of a city water-treatment plant.)

Rock Salt, why do people use it and for what?

I have always been curious about the Culligan man. Exactly why do people choose to put rock salt in their water? What is the purpose of it? The city water is already clean and has flouride in it.
Does the water taste different if you use the salt water method?

How do I uninstall a water softener?

I am buying a new home, an can not afford to replace right away, and we are switching to city water next month anyway. My tank is cracked, and there is red sand like stuff all around the base of the system.

Do I need water filter if I have water softener?

I have city water which is supposed to be already filtered. I was told that if I get a house water softener then I really do not need a filter, especially if I use water from the fridge which already has a small filter. Is this true? Would I gain any additional benefit by installing a separate filter?

I recently installed a new water softener found the city water coming in is 18 but need to know what to set the softener at.

rained, you think that might fix the problem???? Hey Feds!!! Check me out…
Oh, and you could start inspecting all those commercial swimming pools, plus residential…half of them leak, and they won’t fix them till their chemical bill goes over 0 and they still won’t stay blue…
And another thing, anyone want to try reclaiming the storm water over the sewage water….I think a little oil sounds almost tasty after what our city water tastes like, AFTER going through a PUR filter…..
right, and thats why they are putting curves back into rivers, because they have it all figured out.

Dude,,you really haven’t seen how mankind has shaped the world, have you.. Maybe you should live a few more years so you can see for yourself, with your own two eyes, like me.

There’s plenty of water, it’s what we’ve done/do with it.

What would make my tap water smell…?

What would make the water out of my kitchen faucet smell like dirt? I suspect it could be a leak somewhere, but there’s no debris coming out with the water. Just the smell. I use a Pur filter, but even with it turned on I can still smell the dirt. I rent my house and I’m not too sure my landlord wants to be digging up water pipes.
I am on city water. And it smells like dirt, not sulphur. It’s only from the kitchen tap and nowhere else.

Thought we would "go green" and filled our newly painted swimming pool with water from a spring and rain water and of course the pool is green. We have not started the filter yet and I will take a water sample to the pool store for analysis but is this really a bad idea? My family wants me to empty the pool and start over again with city water. We have had a lot of rain and overcast weather lately and some conventional pools I have seen are also green. Help?

Most aggressive pitcher water filter?

I’m looking for a pitcher water filter that will filter out the most contaminants possible. I was looking to purchase an Aquasana countertop filter for my apartment kitchen sink, but the ridiculous faucet/sprayer combo that’s on it won’t take a countertop filter. I don’t want to install an under-sink model, because it’s an apartment and I’m not interested in making that investment for something I move out of.

I’m skeptical of the Brita and PUR pitchers, they don’t seem to do much except improve taste. I’m not worried about taste – my water tastes fine – but our city water tests poorly (high levels of chlorine, higher levels of pharmaceuticals and medicines, high in metals).

Any suggestions? It’s hard to find unbiased review just looking through websites…

We just moved into a new house (built in 2006) and a few of our neighbors have mentioned problems with their water. My family has yet to notice anything but I would still like to test our water quality. Does anyone know who does that or is there something I can buy to determine if we need to install a water softner?

Thank you in advance!
BTW: We have city water!

The town I live in has a water treatment plant but the house we bought years ago had a water softener. It just died so I went to get a new one, but the guy at the store said if I have city water I really don’t need one.

We have city water, and the chemicals i swear are killing my hair. it makes it really straw like, no matter what kind or how much conditioner i use. I’ve tried everything, and even my clothes seem to be suffering. When you turn my water on, the first thing you smell is a chlorine-like smell

Will buying a water softener (those things you hook to the hot water tank) make things better?

I have city water that comes from a fresh water lake. I would like to know if there is any justification for a water softener as I have never had one. I know it helps with laundry but what about taste and expense and maintenance hassle?

At the point where the water enters my home, there are no pressure adjustment valves. The pressure throughout our area is also low. I am thinking about adding a booster pump. Does anyone have experience with the addition of a booster pump to an existing city water line inside the house to raise the overall pressure?
