I want to remove water from my reaction mixture, Toluene is not good solvent for it, and so i need to use ethanol for azeotropic distillation. I wish to know do i have to use dean stark, or normal distillation assembly may serve my purpose?
Thnx a lot GlennR,
I got the point. I just need keep on adding ethanol and distill it out for sevral hrs.

Distillation and osmosis can both be used to obtain water from sea water. Explain why distillation requires a much higher amount of energy as compared to reverse osmosis. Don’t tell me to figure it out myself cos otherwise i won’t be asking questions here!

Im going to use a natural henna/indigo mix to dye my hair, but the instructions say to use distilled water (distilled being in bold font) because any minerals could change the color. Do i really need to go out and buy distilled water? or is there any way to distill water yourself (without actually collecting water vapor and everything). I have a Brita water filter; would that take out the same minerals as distillation?

I’ve been able to detect lead in my local drinking water a few times, and it is very likely contaminated with other chemicals, although it is generally safe to drink. What are some inexpensive ways to filter tap water besides carbon filters? Is distillation a great way to purify it?

I know large commercial industries use the girder sulphide process but what about distillation. If distilled regular water was heated to 100 degrees celsius at sea level, the regular water would boil off leaving the heavy water behind. I know that this would take a lot of energy and i think out of 3.6L of water i would only get 1mL of heavy water but i was just wondering.

continued… into a test tube so I can calculate how much sugar was dissolved (crystallization). I covered the test tube (with a tool) and washed it under cold running water for about 30 seconds but no crystals appeared. Why?

Btw, is it possible to use fractional crystallization to separate sugar and salt?

Also, why in distillation, e.g. (ethanol+water)/(hexane+water), it will not be completely pure?
