I know baking soda reduces vinegar. Baking soda reduces stomach acid. So will baking soda reduce fluoride or Hexafluorosilicic acid that is used to fluoridate water?
Or are we stuck with Activated Alumina to do the job?

Good fish filter/pump, DIY, whatcha think?

Okay I tried posting this earlier and it didn’t go through.

I have a 150 gallon tank. 2 60 gallon tetra filters that are getting noise and not quite doing the job I feel. Like this one:

http://di1-2.shoppingshadow.com/images/pi/5f/d0/fe/29577179-260×260-0-0_Tetra+Tetra+Whisper+Power+Filter+60+30+60+Gallon.jpg

My questions are:

- What is the best filter for my $. I don’t want to spend 500$ on a pump/filter set up if I can spend less.

- Are there any DIY methods I could try? Reliable pond pump/filters? Or above ground swimming pool pumps? A website link to a guide?

- Also how often am I supposed to change this water in the 150 gallon… There’s like 6-9 small platy, and 6 1.5" convicts.

They were in like a 55 gallon before, but I was changing the water every 2 weeks because that tank COULD get messy fast if I made em poop a bunch.

My tetras are noisy, and I don’t think they’re cuttin it anymore. What should I do?

Water dispersion in DIY trickle filter?

I made a trickle filter for additional bio filtration recently….I used a plastic container…drilled a hole in the lid….vinyl tube feeding in through the top siphons the water into the container….

If you have experience with trickle filters yourself or you know the answer anyway and can suggest something, the question is this:

I’m trying to get complete dispersion, like a spray…inside the container to fully utilize the media…as it stands now….with a single unmodified tube feed….it’s a single stream of water that makes contact with only the center portion of the media…

Any ideas what I can attach to the tube or how I can modify or what I can install in the container to accomplish this?

I looked through multiple hardware stores and didn’t see anything I thought would do the job.

Much thanks….
*looking down at the zero responses* lol

Yes, this is…believe it or not…a fish related question….

Thinking of starting up a small planted aquarium and I was wondering what a good filter would be. I don’t want an internal filter ’cause it takes up too much room, no under gravel because I know that’s bad, I don’t mind a hang-on-the-back but will it create too much movement? I think an external canister filter would be ideal but it’s not a large tank and the cost quite a bit. What is the best filter for the job?

I want to add a faucet to the back of my house. (For garden hose) My basement is unfinished and all of the pipes are exposed, so everything is easy to get to. Is there an easy way to go about doing this? I’m no plumber, but I am pretty handy, so if it’s not too difficult, I should be able to tackle the job.

Help with character name?

So, I recently started a story, which seems to be turning into a novel. So far, I’ve got three main characters, and two others (don’t have much to do with plot). My very first main character is a female. She doesn’t talk, has long black hair (which she carelessly throws in a pony tail), is always either angry or emotionless, and is intimidating. She’s the one I need a name for. The whole story is set sometime in the future, if that helps. My next main character is the assigned partner to the girl, his name is Brian Shirley. I couldn’t think of another last name, but Brian suits him perfectly. My final main character is Ms. Culligan, their boss and president of the government. I don’t want to give away much of the plot line, but it’s an action type of story, and possibly a bit of romance. Their (the girl’s and Brian’s) job is to exterminate magical creatures, so they don’t hurt humans. Brian hates it, but the girl is apathetic. She’s also very independent; when Ms. Culligan assigned Brian to her, she hated it and glares at him a lot. Oh yeah, Brian calls the girl "Agent X" just to annoy her. :D He’s easygoing, lighthearted, and friendly, so he’s just annoying her in a playful way. Yeah, so I guess that should be good enough. I’ve searched in so many places for a name for "Agent X", but there’s no name I can find. I considered Raven for a second, then trashed the idea. I’ve also considered Raina and Phoenix, but they just don’t match. ACK! Any help will be appreciated.
I forgot to add something else. Both "Agent X" and Brian are nineteen, and Brian is almost twenty. When I said Agent X doesn’t talk, she seriously doesn’t say a word. She hasn’t for five years. The records on her were either lost or never entered in, so no one knows who she is. The government keeps her only because of how good she is at her job (because of her apathy). Brian doesn’t always tease her, he just started calling her Agent X just because he didn’t want to keep thinking "my partner."

Which shower filter is best?

Between Sprite, Aquasana and Culligan.

I am looking for something to improve the quality and health of my hair. My ideal shower filter would remove 99% of chlorine, chemicals, metals and enhance pH balance and work in all water temperatures without diminishing too much quality over time. I would like to spend under 0 and only replace the filter once a year, or twice a year if the refill is a reasonable price (under ). Has anyone tried a bunch of shower filters? Which ones did you like and What worked the best? I really need just a good quality filter that does the job, is durable and will last long. I don’t care about aesthetics.

I found a penny taped under a counter top when I was painting a house. I had to remove it to do my job, and asked the owner if it belonged to them. They said "no" and told me to keep it as good luck. Is this a religious act?

How to fire an employee?

I work for Nestle waters north america. We own many brand names. Arrow Head, Deer park, Poland Spring, San Pelogrino, etc. My job is pretty much to watch over my delivery drivers and wear them out. The faster they get the job done the better for my bonus. My problem is, I have this old delivery driver who hass been with us for 20 years and is really slow compared to the new, fresh, and strong employees. the job is pretty much delivery the big bottles of water from one house or business to the next. PLus, the new guys get paid half of my old guy. I know it’s against the law to fire him for his age. How can I get him to quit or set him up to fail so I can legally fire him? I don’t care about his life. I’m all about profits and my bonus
that’s the problem. He’s incapable of keeping up with the young guys. the are new and not beat up yet. I’m sure 20 years of pounding the pavement has wore out his joints. Should I feel bad for him? Is it all about business. We deserve the money more than the guys who actually do the labor. Management is the key to success and we shoudl get paid all the money right?
heartless and immoral? Please, we are about profits and making our company grow. We can easily replace the grunts. why is it our responsibility to care for our employees. we paid him for his time. NOw he is no value to us anymore. He shoudl get paid less than the new fresh guys.

We had them come and repressurize the tank (with our own pump btw) and change the filters. Since then we got a bill for over 0. I am postponing paying it because I lost my job. Now the darn thing is leaking every time we turn it on. Its at the base by the slide switch. We can’t call them to fix it because of the outstanding bill. What can we do? Any fix-it-yourself websites out there anyone can recommend?
I will post a picture.

Sorry the link didn’t post like I wanted.
Its a side sliding one.
Feel free to email me. Yahoo isn’t letting me post the correct link.

or can I use Pur or Brita type to *sufficiently* do the job? I have an infant so the contaminants are a major concern.
Our last house had great water quality so we have a faucet-mounted Brita… we’d love to buy a new filter and call it a day.I think Brita and the like are able to get rid of lead, but uranium?
So be brutally honest, if I have to shell out the big bucks for reverse osmosis let me know!
Thanks!
Well, I do live in a rocky area, a Native American area.
The uranium is not exceeding legal limits but is just higher than other areas. The lead is due to a shooting range near the lake we live on.

I appreciate the info about reverse osmosis being wasteful. I wasn’t aware! Thanks!

Is there fluoride in my bottled water?

What bottled water should I buy to limit my fluoride exposure? Are they all the same?

Poland Spring?
Aquafina?
Dasani?
Store Brand Spring water?
Any other?
Hey awesome job with the criticism, look at the facts my friend it’s not good to ingest fluoride at high levels, I thinks the Nazis figured out it made the concentration camp victims into docile sheep. While fluoride is good for teeth, I’m pretty sure the only teeth are in my mouth, so I’ll put fluoride on in the form of toothpaste not in my stomach in the form of tap water. "baaaaaaaaaaaah"
