Many of my plants are sensitive to the chemicals found in our tap water (flouride, salts, chloride, etc) but i cannot afford to keep buying specialized water for them. So my paIm have brown spots on the leaves and my spathes have brown tips.
I hear rainwater is great, but it dosent rain everyday, plus i live in an apartment-which makes rainwater collecting awkward. I have about 26 plants. mostly tropical foilage and maybe a few succulents……

I’ve heard the chlorine and flouride content of tap water is harmful to your average house plant. I have lucky bamboo, mother-in-law’s tongue, a little palmy/fern looking thing, porthos, and a big lily.
Usually I let the water sit for a few hours to let whatever chemicals there may be evaporate before I water- but not every time. Sometimes I just get tap water and immediately use it.
And my plants seem ok after months to years of this. So what’s the truth of the matter?

I have rain barrels. I use the water to water my plants. I bought some gold fish to fertilize the water but they died.
I did feed them and they lived all summer but my barrels froze and I haven’t seen them so I’m assuming they died. Which I brings me to another question….how do you keep fish alive in rain barrels during the winter?

I have a 4000 gallon pool that needs to be cleaned. If I could water my plants and grass with it it would be great.

The manufacturer recommends using the water for only one day. I’m especially concerned because we use it for our five month old baby. We don’t let him drink the water but he does splash around a lot. We’ve been emptying the pool water on the lawn and decorative garden so I’d like to avoid adding lots of chlorine or salt or anything that would kill plants, or just dumping all the water down the drain.

I’m growing these babies indoors, four immature garlic plants in two semi-large pots. They seem to be functioning pretty well off of the water I’m giving them- about enough to make water just start to spill out the bottom once every other day- but should I be watering them more or less often than that?
Do you have any tips for this newbie gardener once he decides to move these plants from pot to soil? Do deer attack garlic plants?

I am in Noida, India. I have some plants at home. When I go for vacation for 1-2 weeks, the only way to water the plants is to ask some neighbor to do that. But it doesn’t always work out good. Does anybody know an economical way to water the plants automatically in my absence? I have heard of automatic watering kits available in US but have not seen in India.
Wonderful suggestions. Thanks everybody for sharing great innovative ways to water the plants during vacation.
I tried the thread based water but that didnt work out that well, possibly because the plants were exposed to sun.
I am trying out the inverted soft drink bottle approach now.
My last resort will be the bath-tub one.
Thanks a lot everybody again.

I have some plants out in a garden and need to water them often, when is the best time to water them? I have heard that you shouldn’t do it on hot sunny days and you’re only supposed to do it in the morning or in the afternoon when the sun is not out. Is that true or can I water them any time during the day?
My lawn is really dry too and is starting to turn yellow, are there any tips on how to water it or what kind of sprinkler to buy?

My cats keep wanting to drink out of the toilet, plants and dirty water outside. Everywhere but their water dish. I was thinking that perhaps my cats are craving water with minerals in it? I wanted to see if they like the water better if I put mineral water in…

I do not want to throw away water i used in washing (rinsing) clothes or the dishes. But I’m afraid my plants will die if I water them with water with traces of detergent. Is there a way of treating the used water at home without the expensive mechanical water treatments? I read activated carbon can remove some, but not all chemicals from water.

I need help building a large cement "trough" of sorts which will hold water for a very large papyrus plant that is currently taking over my pond. The trough will be approximately 6 feet long by 3 feet wide by about 3 feet tall. I have purchased cement and already have chicken wire for support. My question is what is the best way to get it to retain water without using a product which will be detrimental to my papyrus. Is this something I even need to worry about since I have plants that I water daily right next to the location this will go to and I can just top off what is missing every morning when I water. Any input is welcome and appreciated! Thanks!
