I’ll be moving to Baton Rouge, which has some of the most polluted water in the country. I was thinking about just having bottled water delivered to me but then when I take a shower, I could still be subject to the contaminants. Should I get a whole house water filter instead? But, then I was thinking the plumbing could already be polluted. Plus, when I go out to any restaurant, the water will be dangerous also.

I was at Lowes yesterday talking with the plumbing guy. He said a few things that remotely made sense, but I challenge what he said. I just want honest open opinions, and if someone knows better, please tell me.

I’m about to put new filter cartridges and a new RO (Reverse Osmosis) element. He told me there are better systems out now. OK, so I haven’t followed plumbing advances very well.

I’m thinking of putting a whole house filter BEFORE my water softener (not including the outside hose bibs). My mineral count is somewhere around 400 (had it tested a few years ago and I hope I remembered that correctly). The guy at Lowes said that my RO drinking water should also be before my water softener. Is that true? Since I’m planning on doing some work, what would be the best way to handle this?

Thanks for your help.

The guy at Lowes made some statements about ultra pure water being acidic. He said that ultra pure water will dissolve copper pipes, brass, lots of different irons and such. While I suppose that a lack of minerals in water COULD leach minerals from copper, I think he was a bit over the top. If you know, please let me know. It won’t make any difference to how I handle my drinking water situation, but it’s always nice to know something for sure.

Again, thanks.

i think its a little contradictive that the same material we use for drinking water (PVC) is being recalled for children’s toys. so in that case shouldn’t it be recalled for our plumbing too, what do you think can be a better alternative?

If so, what to do, short of replacing plumbing?

Electric salt-free water softener systems?

I’ve seen the ad’s for these electric water softener systems, that just wrap wires around the plumbing, and that is supposed to do the same as "normal" water softener systems. Has anyone tried these electric systems, and do the work? Thanks!

Is there something wrong with the plumbing? It happens in all faucets, shower, and washing machine.

Thanks!

When you buy a shower faucet, does the union come attached to it?

Our house was built in 1968 and our most recent remodel was a few years ago. We retiled our shower ( professionally ) and also had them install new faucets. Since then we have started having problems and it has progressively gotten worse. The cold water faucet seems fine ( hard to tell because we have a water saver showerhead ) but the hot water is barely turned on to get a warm shower. It’s almost off- when you turn if off, it doesn’t even seem like you are actually turning it, it’s so slight. My husband said he has the parts to fix it, but he hates plumbing, and dreads taking it apart, that he won’t be able to fix it and it’ll only be worse, or create more problems. Anyone know what might be going on with the faucets?
I don’t know the brand-so we couldn’t contact the manufacturer- but I would hope it’s a good brand because we picked high grade tile. Also, the cold water faucet drips when we are showering- not alot but enough if you happen to get underneath it! The hot water in the rest of the house is normal.

How can I drain my water softener of water and salt?

It is disconnected from the plumbing already.

water dispenser connection for fridge freezers?

Our tall fridge brokedown before we’ve had a chance to refit a new kitchen. Is it possible to buy a fridge freezer and use it without the water dispensing plumbing in place until later?

Once the kitchen is done we expect to use the water dispenser.

This unit is a "Mark 2" water conditioner, and was in the house when I bought it a couple years ago. It consists of three tanks, each about 3.5 feet tall, one wider than the others.

Several indications are that it’s at least twenty years old. Though it’s hooked into the plumbing, I highly doubt that it’s doing anything; I suspect there’s a control on the unit that allows the water to bypass it. It’s so old and apparently un-maintained that I wouldn’t trust it anyway. I don’t even know that I *want* a water conditioner, though I do want to get a new whole-house filter. I just want it gone.

Who can I get to remove this thing? Any old plumber? I contacted a Culligan man by email, but no response yet (it’s the weekend). I’m curious about the removal fee and whether the thing would be of any value to the Culligan dealer. Thanks

I’m installing a "Pur" water filter on my faucet, and the original aerator has a 15/16" adapter. The water filter is 13/16" (these measurements are both verified). I’ve scoured yahoo, google and all sorts of hardware and plumbing websites, and several Home Depots and local hardware stores to no avail. This seems like a seldom-used if not completely unheard of adapter, nearly as I can tell. Does anybody make them?
