I have 1 well that supplies 2 homes & 2 granny units. I’m looking for people who know what to do, no guesses please. :)

Well test results:
Total alkalinity mg/l 188.1
Total hardness gpg 13
Total iron mg/l 0
Total manganese mg/l 0
pH 7.1
Total dissolved solids mg/l 270
Visual appearance clear
Nitrate (NO3) mg/l 50

We basically have hard water that is high in nitrates. We are getting differring opinions/ideas on how to proceed.

We would like to get the nitrates out. We are concerned with a softener because we don’t want the sodium left for the plants/lawn & reverse osmosis wastes too much water.

Is there any way to get the nitrates out?
If we can’t get nitrates out, what is the best system to go with? Would a UV filter work? Would magnets work?
Should we filter at the pump or at each house?
What are the pros/cons?
Is there a website that can explain the different methods?

If the softener is the only way, then we have to do that. But just want other views. :)

I know they even SELL it in stores! Why is the government forcing fluoride down our throats and forcing us to absorb it through our skin, when water filters will not even remove it (except expensive reverse osmosis?!)

If anyone thinks fluoridated water is good for a child, read this…written by American Dental Association….the ONLY people who were advocating for fluoridated water in the first place?!

http://www.ada.org/prof/resources/positions/statements/fluoride_infants.asp

I am SOO frustrated that my water is fluoridated…it is very bad for adults, too….it is only sometimes good for teeth but nearly always bad for other health.
By the way, water filters really do not filter out fluoride, just chlorine, mold, heavy metals (mercury etc) and bacteria.

I was mortified to find out my filter wasn’t filtering fluoride.

Here in Pennsylvania, there is a bill out to mandate statewide fluoridation!!! My local rep is one of the authors…ugh…I feel so helpless.

Nazi Germany used fluoride to placate German citizens, because it causes hypothyroidism. It may coincide with the U.S. obesity epidemic.

I get something called Mountain Valley Spring Water from Arkansas in glass bottles. I sure hope it’s not fluoridated! (I am pretty sure it’s not.)

What water is better (reverse osmosis or spring)?

Does anyone know the difference between these 2 types of water? Also, where is the source for both? Lastly, what water is better (reverse osmosis or spring)?

Is Brita water ok for baby's bottles?

I usually use water distilled by reverse osmosis from Publix, but in the whole ‘going green’ thing I hate seeing all of those plastic bottles piling up in the recycling bins. Can I just use a Brita pitcher for the baby’s formula bottles? I don’t know if it gets enough toxins and all out…. thanks!

Does the Reverse Osmosis ClearChoice Reo-Pure 5 stage filtration system remove the flouride in the water? It looks like a good deal but I really want to know about the flouride.

In Drinking Water filters –
whats the difference of "reverse osmosis" and "ion exchange filter"

and what do each do?

Technorati Tags: , , , , , ,

I’ve heard that one difference is simply that, with filtration, the impure water with its impurities eventually clogs up the filter while in reverse osmosis there is a constant flow that washes the impurities away. Is this the only difference?

Is there a store where you can have your water filtered for you through reverse osmosis? Or maybe I could go to a place where you can buy Reverse Osmosis filtered water…Its for a science project.

which water softner system to buy?

he water softner system cost around 0 at Lowes and with installation and everything it will roughly be 00 (including reverse osmosis filteration).

On the other hand, we had a representative from GE-Aqua-pure selling water softner+osmosis system with installation for 00. He claims the system is better than HomeDepot and other places. Does anyone has experience to share with water softners. Thanks

We also have at our sinks and frig a water purifier or reverse osmosis that adds back minerals to the water for better tasting water. Would this be better since there is less salt? We do use Potassium chloride tablets because it is suppose to be better for people with high blood pressure and the like. Please Help!

We have a Challenger brand 4-stage reverse osmosis (R/O) water filtration system (model Conqueror II) which requires the changing of filters about every 6 months and the changing of the membrane about every 2 years. I spoke in person with a water expert at a Culligan supply store and he said our 50 gallons per day TFC membrane was more capacity than what’s needed for a two-person household. He said that if we went with a smaller membrane, i.e. 24 gallons per day, that would be slightly less expensive (about less) but that the real benefit would be higher quality / better tasting water.

I don’t understand how these membranes are manufactured, what goes into them, or how a lower capacity membrane would somehow generate better tasting water — a claim that on the face of it seems counter-intuitive. I’m not inclined to immediately doubt a supposed "expert" but I don’t know this guy so I’m just checking to see if someone else in the know about membranes for home filtration R/O systems can corroborate or alternatively counter his claim. And if you know the answer, might you explain why this is so because I’d like to understand the process myself.

Thank you!

What are some types water filtering processes?

I am trying to get a list of types of filtering processes for a power point presentation. So far I only have two, Reverse Osmosis, and Distilled Water. I am not looking for particular brands of filtering, just WAYS of filtering water at home / office.
