What do you do with used Brita filters?

Can we throw them in the trash? Can we recycle them? We have a couple here and we’re not quite sure what to do with them.

Shoud I just throw these items into my trash can? I’m thinking the ironing board can go in there, but what about my broken water cooler? That thing’s pretty heavy.

Turns out this refrigerator is a Whirlpool and a phone call to them provided the answer. No, Pur makes no recyclable water filters but is developing one for the future. It’s a shame because it is a huge plastic cylinder. However, I will also call Waste Management to get their confirmation as our trash and recycle materials collector.

Didn’t really have room for the entire correct question in the title…

I’m planning on getting a water softener for my home and am having problems understanding where companies such as Culligan get their prices.

The house is pre-plumbed.
I feel very confident that I am 100% capable of installing a system on my own.
I know the quality of my water and know what I am looking for in a water conditioning system. (At least I think I know what I am looking for)

I can go to a store like Home Depot or Lowes and buy some water softener that looks like a little trash can (the membrane and the salt storage are a single unit). I would have to install this myself and if I wanted to do it properly get the permits from the city. (Supposedly I have to do this because if I don’t install backflow protection I can backflow my membrane into the municipal supply. This is what Culligan told me, I haven’t independently verified it.) The unit only costs about 0 though.

Just to see what they would charge, I had Culligan come out and give me a free estimate. They have the systems that look a little more "sturdy" with a separate salt storage unit and one of those membranes that looks like a compressed air cylinder. Their system cost about 00.

There might be a little difference on some of the bells and whistles, like auto-regeneration and other items, that I would pay much closer attention to when I am deciding on a unit. But what is the big difference between these units?? Is Culligan just trying to overcharge because they are Culligan? Is their unit going to last 7 times as long as the big box retailer’s unit?

I know my parents had an expensive "Culligan-esque" softener installed in their home 15 years ago and they have never had any maintenance done and it still works perfectly… It is just so tempting for me to only spend 0-0 and do the work myself.

Any thoughts or personal experience would be very much appreciated.

How can I get a water softener working?

My house has a water softener that has not been maintained. I opened the top and found hills of a hard white substance. Is this thing trash? If not, how can I get this thing up and running? Thanks in advance

What do I do with my used water filter cartridge?

Okay, so I bought a Pur water filter pitcher so that I would stop buying so much bottled water, with the intention to be more environmentally friendly.

The time just came to replace the cartridge for the first time. What do I with the old cartridge? Can it be recycled at all? I don’t like thorwing things in the trash if I don’t have to.

It smells like my garbage! And no I did not put the bottles in the trash before I drank them.

How do you get the filter out of a brita pitcher?

I feel like an idiot because it’s time to change out the filter on my pitcher. It’s the first time I’m changing it. I opened the filter and have it soaking in the water and have taken out the trash with the package with the instructions on it…
I tried twisting the old filter, but it barely budged and I don’t want to get it stuck.
I have the vintage pitcher if that makes a difference.

What do you do with used Brita filters?

I have a Brita filter, and I just finished using my first removable cartridge that you place in the filter. But what do you do with the used Brita filters? It feels weird to put it in the trash and create more waste when I initially bought the Brita filter to minimize my plastic bottle usage and be more environment-friendly.

Any thoughts?
