I am trying to determine whether to buy a water softener or water conditioner. I am getting conflicting stories about which will work better. Some say they are pretty much the same and some say a water condtioner is the only thing that will get rid of rust. Any suggestions?

Do you need water conditioner, if you are you using bottled water for fish bowls?
If I am getting a Betta, is it best to get a tank or bowl?

I know that usually a tank has to be set up for three days before you can put in goldfish but how much longer than that should I wait if I accidentally added five times the amount of tap water conditioner.
I haven’t bought the fish yet

I was wondering if I combined Brita water with my fish water conditioner would it help the water quality/ improve it by making it softer and removing more heavy metals found in the straight tap water? My fish water right now is quite hard and I was wondering if this would help.

I have very hard, alkaline well water and the pH reading is around 7.8 or so. I use AquaSafe water conditioner and Stress Coat. I just recently added some Highland Rose sandstone formations to my tank as I have heard that this type of stone can help to buffer the pH to neutral. How can I neutralize the pH without adding a lot of chemicals? Answers are greatly appreciated!

I’ve heard many stories but there was only one that sounded reasonable. It goes like this, take two or three gallon containers and pour water into them. Then put about three to four drops of water conditioner into them. Shake them up and wait 24 hours until your pur the water in. First take the fish out with the old water, then clean the gravel, let the filter work for a few minutes and wash the filter thingy, but not all and pour the fishy back in.
IS there any better ways?

I’m looking for a good all around water conditioner, one that treats the water for everything (ph, alkalinity, stresscoat, water hardness, etc). I have very hard water and I need to maintain a ph of 7.2 for my oscar. Any info on water conditioning for oscars would be great as well.

I’m going to use tap water in a 3 gallon aquarium. The water conditioner says to use 1 teaspoon (5 mL) for every 10 gallons, but since it’s less than 10 gallons (3 gallons) I don’t know how much to use. So how much water conditioner should I use?

This unit is a "Mark 2" water conditioner, and was in the house when I bought it a couple years ago. It consists of three tanks, each about 3.5 feet tall, one wider than the others.
Several indications are that it’s at least twenty years old. Though it’s hooked into the plumbing, I highly doubt that it’s doing anything; I suspect there’s a control on the unit that allows the water to bypass it. It’s so old and apparently un-maintained that I wouldn’t trust it anyway. I don’t even know that I *want* a water conditioner, though I do want to get a new whole-house filter. I just want it gone.
Who can I get to remove this thing? Any old plumber? I contacted a Culligan man by email, but no response yet (it’s the weekend). I’m curious about the removal fee and whether the thing would be of any value to the Culligan dealer. Thanks

Instead of letting the water sit out, can I just add a few drops of that water conditioner that is for aquariums, to remove the chlorine? Or is that bad for house plants?

I found that my tank is going through the nitrogen cycle and im going to start changing water.
when we change the water, does putting chemicals like the water conditioner affect the cycle?
The man in the pet store told me to put some everytime i changed water.
He did not tell me anything about the nitrogen cycle.
am i supposed to put anything in the water or just put the tap water and leave it as it is?
Would the tap water affect anything?
There is fish inside my tank.
Thank you!
