I live in an apartment complex that DOES have a water softener but I think the PH levels are out of wack because several of the people in the building complain about itchy skin, scalp issues and those of us with blonde hair now have rust/orange colored hair.
When the landlord is confronted he states that the water company has already come out and things are "fine".
I on the other hand tend to disagree … because my hair is still a rustic orange instead of a beautiful blonde – and my scalp is still flakin’ up a storm.

My skin shouldnt feel like it is, my scalp shouldnt be giving me flake issues and for the amount of money I spend on my hair it shouldnt be orange…. PLEASE HELP

Can someone with a similar situation please suggest a Shower Filter that has worked for them – I’d like the name of a brand of Filter – not just a store where I can find one (most of the ones HD, Lowes and what not carries only takes out Chlorine, I need one that takes out Iron as well.

I was at Lowes yesterday talking with the plumbing guy. He said a few things that remotely made sense, but I challenge what he said. I just want honest open opinions, and if someone knows better, please tell me.

I’m about to put new filter cartridges and a new RO (Reverse Osmosis) element. He told me there are better systems out now. OK, so I haven’t followed plumbing advances very well.

I’m thinking of putting a whole house filter BEFORE my water softener (not including the outside hose bibs). My mineral count is somewhere around 400 (had it tested a few years ago and I hope I remembered that correctly). The guy at Lowes said that my RO drinking water should also be before my water softener. Is that true? Since I’m planning on doing some work, what would be the best way to handle this?

The guy at Lowes made some statements about ultra pure water being acidic. He said that ultra pure water will dissolve copper pipes, brass, lots of different irons and such. While I suppose that a lack of minerals in water COULD leach minerals from copper, I think he was a bit over the top. If you know, please let me know. It won’t make any difference to how I handle my drinking water situation, but it’s always nice to know something for sure.

I bought a house that was a foreclosure and I’m not sure what to do with the water softener. It’s outside and the labels are gone, so I’m not even sure what brand it is. The control part says "METER" on it. Is that a brand name? Also, on the back it says "9 lb salt setting" and there’s a number, "A13899".

This is a 2 part question.
1. Any ratings on Whirlpool water softner sold by Lowes? They only have 2 models, one is 30,000 grains and the other is 45,0000 grains.
2. How to install in garage preplumbed with PVC in the wall. I bought it from Lowes and they sold me some flexible copper tubes to connect. But my garage has 2 pvc outlets for water softener which are 2ft lower than the top of water softener. Do I need any extentions to connect to bare PVC outlets? Bare meaning they are just pvc tubes closed with pvc caps. I don’t see any threads to attach the copper tubes sold by Lowes? How does this set up work? Thanks in advance.

I’m going to be moving in a month & will need to get a water softener (or something like it) because area uses well water & it has hard water. I’ve heard that it is not good to drink the water after it’s been through a water softener. Is this true? And what would be alternatives to a water softener? I was wondering about Eco Water? We just purchased a new house and it has a new water softener in it. I had heard once that when you have a water softener, you don’t have to use as much laundry detergent as is recommended in the washing machine . Has anyone else ever heard this or do you do this?
