I feel your pain! I also went on a quest many years ago for the best water filter and tested several.
I finally found one that 100% works and is not a rip-off. My family has now used it since 2006 and we won’t buy any others. Berkey water filters.
They filter out pathogenic bacteria, lead, mercury, viruses, cysts, parasites, radon 222, pesticides, herbacides, chlorine and more. They reduce all heavy metals by 95%.
They are easy to put together and virtually maintenance free. We love them.
Good luck!
I’d suggest a water softener. My mom had one of those in her house when I was growing up, now that water was TASTY. I remember before we got it it was disgusting then we had some guy come over and give us a lecture on the water softener, (which was long and boring! like 2-3 hours long!). We didn’t get it at first since we didn’t have the $500 it cost to get one (prices are currently $500). They also cost about 20 bucks a month for salt (giant pieces of salt) that it requires. All in all it was worth it, 20 bucks a month but you use like 1/4 of the amount of shampoo you were using before, 1/4 the amount of laundry detergent you were using before, and you don’t have to buy water from the store!
