What are the orange/brown stains on the bottom of my sports bottle?
I have gone through two sports bottles because of mottling stains on the bottom that can’t be removed. They range from orange to brown. They can not be scratched off and I’ve put them through the dishwasher but nothing has an effect on them.
The only liquid that has ever been used is water from the faucet (I use a PUR filter if that matters). I carry the sports bottle with me everywhere I go so I’m always drinking out of it.
A friend joked that it could be fluoride staining the bottom and it is an interesting theory but I’m a bit concerned because I’d like to know what’s causing it.

you could have hard water, and it could be the iron accumulating in it.
Try getting some water delivered to your home. It takes much better than tap too
Yuk. I dunno… I’d be inclined to say it might be some type of algae. I know a brownish film develops in my glasses if I leave water sitting in them for a long time (like when I misplace that water glass and find it weeks later?). If you wash it in the dishwasher, it could be that it doesn’t come quite clean, then the heat from the dry cycle bakes it on (so it doesnt’ scratch off easily). Or it could just be becoming discolored. I’d just get a new one every few weeks and avoid having to figure it out.
you’ve got iron in the water.( it’s not going to hurt you.)
