If you have a natural light tank they are beautiful!! Plus they are great parent's if you let the egg's hatch. They are aggressive to other kinds of fish but tolerate their own kind during spawning. They aren't mouth breeders so you don't have to worry about daddy getting weak during the wriggler stage. (where they don't know how to swim) . They are extremely entertaining. ps. Make sure you get a declorinator that won't kill your natural bacteria convict cichlids are great starter fish!! they are hardy and come in many pattern’s. Oh and also beware of the fish marked as aggressive because it will just bully everyone and may even end up attacking/ killing off the others (true story). I can tell you if your going for conversationall fish go with a nice docile fish such as a Ram, Africans,or even go different with a small mouthed fish like a Gourami and with small or med schooling fish and Plants. Rams are pretty dwarf fish and the Africans are pretty but very teritorial.
