What is the best water softener?
We need a water softener but have limited space to put one. Is it best to get one from Lowes, Sears or a company like Culligan?

GE makes a little one that you can buy at Home Depot. Here is a link…it’s only 30" tall x 21"d x 14"w. GE softeners work well and the parts are widely available and reasonable.
Generally, there is no major difference in the brands except that companies like Culligan will lease you one so you don’t have to pay up front. They build the cost into the salt delivery fees or a monthly fee.
With this plan they fix it if something goes wrong.
Sears softeners are good, but when you need parts you have no choice but to buy from them, and they take advantage of it!
Companies like Rainsoft are a total rip-off, they will high pressure sales you into spending over $4000 for a system that does the same thing as if you buy a softener and reverse osmosis unit at Home Depot for about $800
Both Lowes and Sears should have warranty on their products, and that is how I would choose. That way if anything goes wrong, you are covered by either a store or factory gaurantee!
I’ve had a few over the years. My parent’s bought a RainSoft softener 22 years ago and it still works better than all of the ones I’ve had combined. It’s a little more expensive, but if I move again and there isn’t one already in the house, I’m buying a RainSoft.
