Every municipality is different, but generally municipal water should be filtered before showering or drinking. The main health issue is chlorine, that is added to water systems in order to kill bacteria and organisms, both in the water, and that accumulate in the pipes used to deliver it to your residence. I have done a lot of research on chlorine and health effects. When chlorine was added to public water in the 1920′s it was approx. 100 ppm (parts per million). Shortley after, cancer cases mainly bladder, kidney, liver, were attributed to chlorine. As chlorine levels increased, (because the water progressively gets dirtier and more has to be added), to 400ppm in 1979, and presently most cities such as Toronto, maintain approx. 500ppm, which is extremely high, and dangerous to ingest. Governments don’t want to admit it is a health risk, due to liability issues, but most agree that it is necessary to add it at the source, and have consumers be responsible for filtering at the delivery point.
The best system for drinking is a 5 stage Reverse Osmosis. The filters have to be changed approx. yearly, and Water Depot sells this unit , for about $700.00. Incidently I sell the identical unit myself for 1/2 that , but that is not why I’m writing this. This unit is so efficient, that it could be plugged into a swamp and give you pure drinking water.
You should also consider a shower filter for your family. Having a ten minute hot shower is equiv. to 10 glasses of unfiltered water, as your skin absorbs the chlorine through your skin , and it is inhaled, which as you can imagine, is quite dangerous. (They are about 65 bucks, and worth it. My wife also notices the difference in her skin and hair.)
Shop around for the best unit, but avoid the cheap imported ones, as they aren’t much good. (Strictly carbon filters only work with cold water and are useless in showers, unless of course your family only has cold showers, lol).
You are more than welcome to email me , and I can send you some literature on the health effects of chlorine, lead etc. that is present in your water. Also the units I sell (Canada only) are fully guaranteed, but a lot less, as I wholesale them, and it is not a full time business. I hope this helps….Dr. Harvey Glimebinder
I just installed one under kitchen sink for drinking water-several types all you need a carbon cartridge filter system-easy to install cost was 40 dollars that’s with an added faucet just for drinking water-local hardware had them- can get the name and model of it let me know through email-done threw box away
Get water delivered to your home and use a cooler.
I’ve had a top of the line water filter on my tap and the water was tasteless. I would never do it again. I get Ice Mountain delivered. Everyone loves the taste. Very cold !
