What should I do about horrible tap water?
They say that tap water is better than bottled water, both for us, and the environment. Here lies the problem. (I’m from NC btw) I used to drink straight from the sink or the fridge door. It tasted fine (like you would expect water to taste) and I almost replaced soda/tea/coffee entirely. I moved to TX (Killeen) and I can’t stand the water here! At first I could barely stand to take a shower in it but obviously I had to get used to it.(If I don’t keep the bathroom door open I still get that weird feeling like I’ve been in the pool too long) I tried attached a Pur filter to my tap, it didn’t really help. I took the filtered water and put it in a Brita pitcher… Nothing. I can still taste that chemically-cholriny gunk. I do buy water by the gallon rather than individual bottles, but I’d like to drink from the tap again. I can’t really modify my sink/plumbing area (yay apartment living). Other than the above filters and boiling water every time I get thirsty, what can I do? Buying all those gallons can’t be any better than buying Auqafina?
I checked the water reports available online for both my current city and my home. Home seems to have a lot less of most of the contaminants listed. *lightbulb*

All water filters are not created equal, and since it sounds like chlorine taste and smell are your primary problems, you need to research water filters that remove 99% of chlorine. They should also be NFS certified. You can buy dechlorinating filters for your faucets and shower heads, so you can start to enjoy your drinking water and your showers again!
Good job buying by the gallon as it dilutes the oils in the plastic going into your body. There are some ionizers that hook up under the sink and then use a charcoal filter instead of just the paper filters. Also you can use peppermint or spearmint or even catnip to make the water taste better. I use to use peppermint to make some really bad tasting sulfur water taste better.
Get involve with the local government. Have them upgrade the water supply in your city.
The Brita and Pur pitchers and even some sink filters have the same problem. The visibly small filter results in less effective filtration than a countertop or under counter water filter that has much more filter media. The beauty is that they are actually less expensive in the long term. You can read all about it in the article below. Don’t settle for a small ineffective filter when you can get out bad tastes, odors, up to 99% of chlorine, heavy metals, synthetic chemicals and organic chemicals with a high-quality countertop system with multiple filtration stages. Installs in seconds, looks nice and takes up very little room.
You can get one risk free with a 60-day guarantee and they are cheaper than even a Brita filter in the long run. Better than bottled water quality so you improve your health and the environment. Great job on checking into the quality of your water!
Girl, I just moved to West Texas and I know what you mean!! Call Culligan or Sierra bottled water delivers gallon jug to house and apartment complex for $15-30/mo (depending on your plan). Those brita water filters are useless against this water.
I brought a culligan shower filter and a crystal bathwater filter from amazon for my bathrooms and my skin and hair have thanked me for it. The shower filter was SUPER EASY to install and to use the bath crystal you just drop it in your bath and swirl it around (instructions say 3-8 minutes but I just drop it swirl it and walk away).
The little ball eliminates the chlorine order completely and you can actually see the water getting clearer as it sits in the tub. If you have a handy friend you can purchase the countertop filter that replaces your spout. Wouldn’t try it in an apartment, though. These are better eliminating that chlorine taste and smell. West Texas water isn’t very contaminated just alot of mineral deposit and
chlorine (which isn’t the best thing to have in abundance in your water). Which accounts for the smell, dry skin, drier hair, spotty dishes and stained teeth. Welcome to Texas…
