What would make my tap water smell…?
What would make the water out of my kitchen faucet smell like dirt? I suspect it could be a leak somewhere, but there’s no debris coming out with the water. Just the smell. I use a Pur filter, but even with it turned on I can still smell the dirt. I rent my house and I’m not too sure my landlord wants to be digging up water pipes.
I am on city water. And it smells like dirt, not sulphur. It’s only from the kitchen tap and nowhere else.

There are several things that could cause this problem. First thing. Is your house on the end of a water line. (Are you at the end of a dead end street) If so the lines will collect sediment. Call your local water authority and have them come out and flush the line.
Second: Are you in an area that is currently experiencing a water shortage? If so there is a possibility that your city has switched over to using back up wells. If this is the case the problem will go away after your area gets some good rain.
Third: Is your area experiencing heavy rain fall? If so, the fresh water supply my be getting infiltration from local streams and bodies of water. Again this will go away when conditions change.
What ever your situation. Your best bet would be to call your local water authority and report the "Quality" of your water.
How do I know these things? My wife works for our local water authority. And believe me, she is the authority. If you don’t believe me…just ask her. hahaha
Good Luck
Maybe your hot water tank may need cleaning. Make sure you inform your landlord. Is it hot or cold water that smells? Is it discolored like rust colored?
Maybe that’s the way the water is in your area. Our friend has well water and it smells.
It might be the filter! When you turn on your water it might backflow into the tap.
maybe sulfur do u live near a body of water? my grandmas water was like that but it was still safe to drink just stunk will bad!
No one has mentioned or asked… Are you on well water? or did you have to have water service from the city? If well water..it is simply sulpher and iron..minerals in the water table..not bad for you..but nasty smelling… I have A well and same problem and also A pur water filter…If you have A well..look outside do you see a small pump or blue tank? This is well water
